“The Christian illuminated manuscripts contain an interesting mix of these wonders of beauty… These intricate artworks are not only visually wondrous, but amaze us with their investment of time, skill and infinite detail.”
Marian Bantjes, Wonder
Julia has been delighted to work on Gothic illuminated capitals, practicing on an S and a Q. Illuminated manuscripts have long been a fascination, trying out the craft is a treat!
The process involves sketching the letter design on a grid for transfer or sketching an I followed by clean pencil drawing. Next comes a black pen outline. Illuminated areas are then covered in gold foil or painted, and gouache fills in the colored areas. White gouache is used to give depth and detail to the colored designs. The letter is finished with a black gouache or ink outline.
